Your Feedback Can Help Protect West Bragg Creek Trails

The Alberta Government is currently seeking feedback for the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP).

This land use plan will guide development on the eastern slopes of the Rockies, including West Bragg Creek and Elbow Valley areas of Kananaskis Country.  Currently, the draft plan is out for public consultation.  While the draft plan designates the west Bragg Creek area of Kananaskis Country as an 'Iconic Tourism Destination', the actual land management has not changed. The parking lot area and a small adjacent environmental area are proposed to become a Provincial Park of 81 hectares (200 acres) in size, or about 0.8 square kilometers.  However, the remaining area that includes the vast majority of trails will remain as an Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) managed multi-use area including clear cut logging, cattle grazing, oil & gas development and recreation.

This is your chance, likely once in our generation, to provide feedback to the government on how this area should be managed.  If you would like to see a different land management and land use in this area, this is your opportunity to influence the SSRP.  One option could be the designation of the West Bragg Creek and Elbow Valley area as a new Provincial Park. This would give Alberta Parks control over the land-base while still providing for recreational activities and a high degree of environmental protection.

Your feedback helped guide the government on how to minimize the impact of logging on the trails, and this is your chance to provide similar feedback on the Land Use Plan.  There is an open house in Cochrane on Nov. 28, and on-line feedback is being accepted until Jan 15, 2014.

If you would like to see further protection for this area in the form of a Provincial Park, which will guarantee this area's priority as a world class recreation area for Albertans, the most effective means to be heard is by writing directly to Premier Redford and the Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation, Dr. Starke:
